Luminol is a chemiluminescent compound commonly used by private investigators, including ADEPT teams, to detect traces of blood at crime scenes, even when efforts have been made to clean or remove it. The investigative process involves spraying a solution of luminol combined with an oxidant across the area of interest. When the solution comes into contact with blood, the iron present in hemoglobin acts as a catalyst, triggering a chemical reaction that produces a blue luminescence.
This reaction is highly sensitive, as only a minimal amount of blood is required to catalyze the luminescence. This makes luminol an invaluable tool for uncovering even trace evidence of blood. The blue glow typically lasts for approximately 30 seconds per application, allowing investigators a brief window to observe and document the reaction. To ensure proper detection, luminol application requires a dimly lit or completely dark environment. Observed luminescence is often recorded using long-exposure photography to preserve evidence for analysis.
Despite its utility, luminol's effectiveness is subject to several limitations. The compound exhibits reactivity not only with blood but also with other iron- and copper-containing substances, as well as with certain chemicals and organic materials, including bleaches, horseradish, fecal matter, and cigarette smoke residue. These false positives can complicate the interpretation of results and may necessitate further testing to confirm the presence of blood.
Additionally, luminol application can compromise subsequent testing of the evidence. The chemical interaction may interfere with some forensic procedures, although it has been demonstrated that DNA can still be successfully extracted from luminol-treated samples. This compatibility with DNA testing underscores luminol’s continued relevance as a vital tool in crime scene investigation despite its limitations.
